Located in Kamakura, eight kilometers from modern-day Kanagawa Prefecture's capital city Yokohama, is the Eight Gates Shrine (Hachiman-jinja) dedicated to the god Hachiman Ōkami. The shrine complex dates back to 1185 when it was initially built by the Minamoto family as a way to appease the deity after a battle won against their enemies. Over time, the shrine has undergone several renovations and expansions while maintaining its historical significance.
