Five-Shindō-ja, located in the town of Aioi in Hyogo Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, dating back to the Heian period (794-1185). The shrine was originally known as Iwaginji and was later renamed Five-Shindō-ja after the five Shinden-zoku, or 'five great shrines', which were considered to be among the most sacred in Japan.
