Located in the town of Kusatsu, mountainous Gunma Prefecture, Shimoishi Inari Shrine is famous for its beautiful architecture and stunning natural surroundings. Dedicated to Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice and prosperity, this shrine's torii gates are arranged by size and color to reflect the importance of different grains in Japanese culture. As one of Japan's 'Thirty-three Kansui' shrines (located near hot springs), Shimoishi Inari Shrine is believed to possess healing properties. During the Obon festival in August, visitors can participate in a ritual called 'tsutsuji,' where they tie paper lanterns to the shrine's gates as an offering for the spirits of their ancestors.

Founded during the Edo period (1603-1868), Shimoishi Inari Shrine has played an important role as a spiritual center for local farmers.
