籏置八幡宮

Miyagi

Located in the town of Kesennuma, Shibata Shrine is dedicated to the storm god Susanoo and the sun goddess Amaterasu. The shrine's name reflects its association with the 'ring-shaped' (sasseki) enclosure surrounding the main hall. Originally built during the Heian period, the shrine has undergone several renovations, particularly after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

文化的背景

As a major Shinto site associated with the storm god Susanoo, Shibata Shrine is often visited during the annual 'Yakimono-en' (Firedance Festival), which features ritual dances performed by shrine maidens. The shrine's architecture reflects its association with weather and natural phenomena.

歴史

The shrine was relocated from its original site in 1997 to protect it from tsunami damage.
