Located in the city of Kumagaya, Gunma Prefecture, Eight-Horned Shrine (Hachimangū) is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines. Dedicated to the deity Hachiman, patron of warriors and protectors, it has been an important site for over 1,300 years. The shrine was founded in 745 CE during the Nara period by Emperor Junan, who requested that his father, the former emperor Shōmu, perform a ritual to protect the country from invasion.
