伊勢神社

Okayama

Ise-ja Shrine, located in Okayama Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest and most revered Shinto shrines, although it was originally located on the coast of Mie Prefecture. The current shrine in Okayama was rebuilt in 1994. As the sacred precincts are not open to the public, visitors can only see the main hall. However, a replica of the historic gatepost is placed outside.

文化的背景

Ise-ja Shrine is famous for its association with the Sun Goddess Amaterasu’s imperial heir, Emperor Seiwa. The shrine's traditional gatepost and sacred precincts are said to mirror the layout of the original shrine in Mie Prefecture.

歴史

The original Ise-ja Shrine was rebuilt six times due to fires and damage from natural disasters.
