楠尾神社

Located in the town of Shikoku, Kagawa Prefecture, Tsurushi no Kami Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the protection of sailors and travelers. The shrine's architecture, known as 'sagamigawara,' features a unique curved roofline reminiscent of a boat's hull.

To respect the shrine's maritime heritage, visitors are encouraged to bow upon entering and leaving, and to leave their shoes at the entrance before walking on the shrine's grounds.

文化的背景

Tsurushi no Kami Shrine is associated with the mythology of the god Enma-O, who is believed to preside over the afterlife of travelers. During the annual Shikoku Matsuri festival, which takes place in August, locals reenact a ritual to ensure safe passage for mariners.

歴史

The shrine was rebuilt in 1701 after being destroyed by a flood in 1672.
