Kamui Byakkoyu, the White Tiger spirit, is believed to reside in Zao Shrine's nearby Bear Valley, however the most famous bear shrine is located in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, called 熊野神社 which literally means 'Bear Cave Shrine'. This Shinto shrine honors the legendary bear spirit of Yatagarasu, a mythical bird with supernatural powers, said to have been born from a bear's fur. According to legend, Yatagarasu helped the sun goddess Amaterasu descend to the underworld.
