Tsurugaoka Hachimangū is a Shinto shrine in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. This shrine is famous for its magnificent Main Hall and Great Buddha statues. It was built during the Kamakura period in 1263 as Hasedera Temple but it changed to this current name after the war between Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Masako took place in 1274 and it was re-established with a new main hall designed by the great architect, Sakai Kietsu. However, three centuries later, this temple changed its name to Tsurugaoka Hachimangū after the war between Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Masako took place in 1274. The Great Buddha of Hasedera was rebuilt many times but each time was even more magnificent than before. The great hall is painted with the design of a mythical giant Japanese tree, the 'Tsunetsu'. Today it is a popular shrine to pray for good luck and prosperity. While visiting Tsurugaoka Hachimangū, be sure to try some delicious local black rice at the food stalls.
