Located in Gunma Prefecture, Oku-Nikko, a town situated about 2 hours away from Tokyo by train, lies the beautiful Kegon Falls and the famous Chuzenji Lake with numerous shrines and temples surrounding it. Among these shrines is the Asamatsu Shrine, better known as the '浅間神社', named after the nearby mountain of Asumai-san or more commonly 'Asumatsu-yama'. According to Japanese mythology, the primary deity enshrined at the shrine was Okuninushi no Kami, who is often depicted with the head of a bear and the body of an archer. As the story goes, this god took care of the fertility of Japan's land by hunting with his magical bow and arrows.
